Currently on Display

This exhibit is about using art as a way to convey certain ideas and, in some cases, taking snapshots of historical events, all through the pens and paints by those who were there and witnessing it firsthand.

Karl Kae Knecht Collection
(1942-1945)

This talented Evansville local made a series of pencil & pen political/social sketches featured in the Evansville Courier newspaper from 1906 until 1960. He was also instrumental in bringing the Mesker Park Zoo to Evansville, having a lifelong love for animals and the circus.

In this collection are some of the headline cover photos he made for issues from the period of 1942-1945.

McClelland Barclay Collection (1942-1945)

McClelland Barclay had a long time relationship with Navy, particularly in making Navy recruitment posters since WWI. He joined the Navy in 1940 and served until he was MIA while onboard USS LST 342 & was given a memorial burial at sea in 1943.

His work is prominently featured on the covers of The Invader (a popular newsletter issued at the Evansville Shipyard).

These pieces were created by soldiers while either out in the field or onboard a ship. Either way, they help create an eternal snapshot into a small portion of their experience.
